KPMP Participant Letter:
January 2026
Dear KPMP Participant,
Thank you for being part of the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP).Your involvement continues to make a big difference. We are excited to share that KPMP was recently featured in NIH News inHealth, a monthly newsletter from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a big moment for our community. NIH funds several thousand research projects but highlights only a few projects each year. Their focus on KPMP shows how important your support is in improving kidney health for everyone.
Why This Is Important
Because NIH News in Health is widely read by patients, families, educators, community health workers, and the general public, being featured there means:
- KPMP’s work is reaching millions of everyday readers.
- It raises public awareness about kidney disease and the need for more personalized treatments.
- NIH sees KPMP as important enough to highlight in its main public newsletter.
What Dr. Himmelfarb Said

In the NIH story, entitled “Dr. Jonathan Himmelfarb on Personalizing Treatments for Chronic Kidney Disease,” the co-leader of the KPMP Central Hub, explained why conditions like diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure can harm the kidneys over many years. The kidneys work all day and night to clean the blood. High sugar, extra fats, or constant high pressure can slowly cause damage. Learning how this happens helps researchers find better ways to protect the kidneys earlier.
Dr. Himmelfarb also shared why personalized treatment is so important. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not just one disease. People can have CKD for many different reasons, and their kidneys may be affected in different ways. Today, doctors often must try several medicines to see what works. KPMP aims to change that by helping doctors choose the right treatment from the start. You can read the interview with Dr. Himmelfarb by clicking the link above. If you would prefer a hardcopy, please contact your local recruitment site.
Your involvement in KPMP makes all of this possible. You can feel proud that your support is being recognized on a national stage. Thank you for your trust, your time, and your commitment to helping future patients. We look forward to sharing more updates with you as KPMP continues to grow.
