Study overview

Biopsy processing and distribution

How each participant’s biopsy cores are used for diagnosis and distributed for research.

Overview

The goal for KPMP ideally is to obtain 3 cores from each participant, which allows for multiple -omics technologies to be run on the same participant (though on different core samples). Core 1 is used for diagnostic purposes; Cores 2 and 3 are solely used for research:

KPMP 2.0 kidney biopsy core distribution. Core 1 is fixed in formalin, OCT and glutaraldehyde, stored as FFPE, and used for spatial N-glycomics, imaging mass cytometry, Xenium spatial transcriptomics and CODEX (both pending). Core 2 is frozen in OCT for snRNA-seq, 10X Multiome, Visium spatial transcriptomics, CODEX and 3D imaging. Core 3 is snap frozen for spatial metabolomics, lipidomics, imaging mass spectrometry, CODEX and Xenium (pending), or kept in Cryostor for scRNA-seq.

For more information about the current triage process for the biopsy cores, see the pathology protocol on the KPMP website.
